Ford鈥檚 Bridgend Engine Plant is celebrating the arrival of a new 77-metre wind turbine which will directly supply the plant with power.

Ford marked the occasion by inviting pupils from the local Coety Primary School to learn more about renewable energy and to build their own miniature turbines. The 2ft models were put through a simulated wind tunnel to measure their energy-producing capability.

The real turbine will provide up to 1,700 megawatt hours (MWh) of energy per annum to the plant, which manufactures more than 700,000 petrol engines each year. The turbine is also capable of reducing carbon emissions by up to 490 tonnes per year.

Ian Pearson, Bridgend Engine Plant manager, said: 鈥淭he installation of the new wind turbine demonstrates our commitment to supporting sustainable energy.

鈥淚t鈥檚 great that Coety Primary School could mark this occasion with us 鈥 the wind turbine is visible from the school so we hope it encourages an interest in renewable energy and the practical application of science and technology.鈥
