Nissan has today announced investment of £20 million into its Sunderland production plant with the creation of 50 additional jobs.

Coinciding with the launch of the new Juke hatchback, the 50 posts will cover assembly line maintenance at the plant, which is the most productive car manufacturing facility in the UK. The jobs are required to support high volumes across vehicle, powertrain and battery operations.

The £20 million investment enables a raft of updates to the Juke’s design, as well as new engines and technologies – plus an increased capability for customers to personalise the car.

Kevin Fitzpatrick, Nissan’s Vice President for Manufacturing in the UK, said, “This significantly revised new Juke is another example of how we never stand still at Nissan, so we are looking for experienced maintenance professionals who can help us build on our recent achievements and support the efficient running of the plant.”

The UK’s car manufacturing industry is in the midst of significant growth, with billions of pounds invested in the sector each year. Current indications suggest output will top two million by 2017, breaking the all-time record for UK production volumes.

In addition to the Sunderland plant, the UK is also home to the Nissan’s European design centre, situated in Paddington, London. The facility is responsible for the virtual Nissan Concept 2020 Vision Grand Turismo (left), which will be making an appearance at the Goodwood Festival of Speed this weekend.
