Jaguar Land Rover launches new scheme to tackle youth unemployment

13 Nov 2013

As the latest unemployment figures show a fall in the number of jobless in the UK, Jaguar Land Rover has launched a new work experience scheme to boost the prospects of young people in search of work.

The company鈥檚 鈥業nspiring Tomorrow鈥檚 Workforce鈥 scheme is targeted at 16-23 year-olds not currently in employment, education or training, and aims to develop their skills so they can enrol in sustainable employment within the automotive industry.

The programme, designed in collaboration with Birmingham Metropolitan College, is being piloted this week at JLR鈥檚 Castle Bromwich plant, and will use the site鈥檚 new Education Business Partnership Centre. 150 young people in all will take part over the next nine months.

Mike Wright, Executive Director, Jaguar Land Rover, said, 鈥淵outh unemployment is at a record level yet there is a skills shortage in the UK. It makes sense therefore for a responsible business like Jaguar Land Rover to use its success for good and develop a programme that will engage and inspire those who may feel they have no employment prospects for the future.

鈥淭his programme forms part of our Business in the Community 鈥楻esponsible Business of the Year鈥 legacy and I am confident with the support of our delivery partners we can make a tangible difference to the lives of all participants.鈥

Those embarking on the programme will take on a wide range of activities, from community projects to outdoor team-building pursuits, and will receive specialist maths and English support. In addition, there will be the opportunity to gain a manufacturing qualification.

17-year-old Jake Bickerstaff hails from Solihull, has four GCSEs, and has been seeking work for over a year. 鈥淚鈥檝e struggled to find a job because of a lack of experience and qualifications,鈥 he said. 鈥淚 started applying for every job I found but was not getting anywhere.

鈥淚鈥檝e signed up for Inspiring Tomorrow鈥檚 Workforce because I think the experience will make me stand out in the future and will give my CV an edge. It鈥檚 a great way to get into engineering and finding out more about Jaguar Land Rover.鈥
